The poem resembles one that does not end with its last verses; every time you think you have grasped its features, you discover a new and astonishing meaning within it. Since he chose to make words a path to singing, and poetry a space for his voice, Kazem Al Saher, nicknamed “The Caesar,” has remained present in the consciousness of successive and new generations, maintaining a uniqueness that has allowed his experience to transcend the limits of time, fashion, and fleeting phenomena. Many years have passed on this journey, during which music has changed, audience tastes and listener habits have evolved, and the music industry has accelerated, while he continues to search for the space that resembles him, believing that true art is not measured by the number of years but by what it leaves in memory, feeling, and sincerity. Today, with his album “Untitled,” “The Caesar” opens the notebooks of a journey that has spanned decades and discusses in his dialogue with “Okaz” the singing he sees as a remedy, the success that has not changed his inner feeling of a passionate amateur, the transformations in music, and why he does not like the idea of his artistic journey one day becoming a story told on screen.

I Was Afraid of the Reaction

– How did you follow the reactions that accompanied the release of the album “Untitled”?

– I was initially apprehensive about the reactions, which is why I always prefer not to listen to people’s opinions before releasing my works. When the song “Mata” was released, there were mixed opinions between supporters and opponents, but as the other songs from the album were released, the reactions changed, and the audience began to demand the completion of the work. Thank God, the album left a wonderful echo.

The Name Was Chosen by My Son!

– What led you to choose “Untitled” as the name for the album?

– I did not want the album to bear the name of one of its songs because I do not like to reduce a complete musical project to a single song. While searching for a suitable name, my son Wissam suggested the phrase “Untitled,” and I felt it expressed the idea I was looking for, so I settled on it as the album’s name.

“Mata” … The Most Challenging Melody

– Among the songs in the album, which work posed the biggest challenge for you?

– The song “Mata” specifically was one of the most challenging songs for me in terms of composition, even though I love it very much and feel it is close to the musical style I lean towards. Therefore, I called it “the most difficult melody”; it seems simple in form, but reaching its melodic structure and executing it was not easy.

Starting with 12 Songs

– Was “Untitled” initially a project of 18 songs?

– No, the number was not set at 18 songs from the beginning. The project started with 12 songs and then gradually expanded until it reached 24 songs at one stage, before I finally settled on 18 songs. I treated it from the beginning as a complete musical project, so the number remained subject to change during the work phases until I reached the form that I felt expressed the entire experience.

Keeping Up with the Market

– An album of 18 songs might seem like an adventure given the decline in interest in long albums… Were you not afraid of this step?

– I did not approach the matter from the perspective of the number of songs, as much as I was concerned that each song carries a different experience and has its own personality. Certainly, presenting 18 songs is a challenge, especially since each work requires a lot of time and effort, but I did not want to shorten the experience or present it differently just to keep up with the market. My goal was to present the project in a way that I artistically believe in, and I feel that I have achieved many of my artistic dreams through “Untitled.”

Details of the Iraqi Dialect

– How was the behind-the-scenes experience of presenting the album “Untitled” in the Iraqi dialect?

– It was a mentally and artistically exhausting journey that took a long time in preparations, especially since I was keen to present the Iraqi dialect in a way that carries its spirit and details, while also reaching the listener with simplicity and sincerity.

I Deleted “Al-Halween” and Reintroduced It

– What was behind the deletion of the song “Al-Halween” and then its return to the album?

– I deleted the song out of respect for the artist Hamid Mansour after discovering that a four-line segment had been sung by him in 1979, and I was not aware of the details of the lyrics’ rights at that time. There was no communication between us, but I preferred to temporarily delete the song until things became clear, and thank God it returned to the album again; what happened was not intentional from either party.

Why Did You Choose Egypt?

– You chose Egypt to hold the first concert celebrating the album “Untitled”… What does Egypt represent to you after all these years of artistic and public relations?

– Egypt for me is not just a stop for holding a concert, but an essential part of my journey and memories. The Egyptian audience holds a great place in my heart, and this is a genuine feeling I live deeply, not just words. When I talk about it, I feel joy and love because we have many years of companionship, moments, and memories.

It’s Not Distance… It’s the Circumstances

– Despite this relationship, you have been absent from concerts in Egypt for years… Why?

– In fact, I have not distanced myself from Egypt, nor has my relationship with it ever been cut off. Most of my musical works and recording processes have been and still are done in Egypt, which is why I have continuously been present there artistically. What was affected over the past years was the holding of concerts due to the circumstances that the Arab region has gone through, which impacted artistic activity and concerts in several countries, and Egypt was not the only one; I stopped holding concerts in many countries during that period, so I do not consider what happened a distancing from Egypt, but rather circumstances that imposed themselves on the artistic scene in the region.

Concerts in Morocco and Istanbul

– After the concert in Egypt… do you have plans for more concerts celebrating the album “Untitled”?

– Certainly, there is a plan to hold several concerts in the coming period, including one in Morocco and another in Istanbul, along with other concerts in several Arab countries. I hope to be able to celebrate the album with my audience in different countries; they are an audience I cherish greatly, and I always look forward to sharing every new artistic experience I present with them.

From Reality and Imagination

– How have the transformations witnessed in music and Arab society since the 1990s affected your choices and artistic experience?

– The conditions of life in Arab countries have changed a lot, especially with the deep psychological and humanitarian effects left by wars. Sometimes I escape from this reality into imagination, then return to it again, and I try through this space to find what I can express artistically.

The Love of the Audience… My Medicine

– After all these years… what does the love of the audience and their continued support mean to you?

– I have a long-standing audience that has accompanied my journey for many years, and I feel that their love is like medicine for me, just like singing, because it gives me happiness and passion to continue and evolve. The love I receive from different generations, from the older and younger ones and the new generation, and from all over the world, is enough for me and gives me a great motivation to continue working. For me, this love is the true success that I cherish in my career.

Me and Cinema

– After joining the global “Grammy” membership… are you thinking of documenting your artistic journey in a cinematic, dramatic work, or a book?

– I do not interfere in these matters; the relevant authorities and institutions are the ones that make their decisions, but personally, I do not like the idea of turning my artistic journey and biography into a cinematic, dramatic work, or a book. I believe that each stage of my journey has its own details, experiences, and memories, and I do not like to reduce this long journey to a single work; rather, I prefer that what I have presented in art and works be the true expression of this journey.

I Don’t Find Time to Chase Rumors

“Okaz” asked Kazem Al Saher about the rumors that follow him from time to time regarding illness or retirement and how he deals with this news after an artistic career that has spanned decades… and he answers:

Since my beginnings, I have not been preoccupied with following rumors, and I often do not know what is written. I also do not follow social media continuously because I have what occupies me all the time; I move between the studio to record new works, preparing for concerts and upcoming projects, training, and listening to music, in addition to keeping up with artistic developments around the world. Therefore, I do not find time to follow what is said or to get into details that do not add anything to my work.
