أدانت هيئة المحلفين في محكمة التاج البريطانية بمدينة كامبريدج المتهم في قضية مقتل الطالب السعودي محمد القاسم، بعد محاكمة استمرت أسابيع، خلصت فيها إلى ثبوت جريمة القتل العمد، رافضة دفوع المتهم بأنه كان في حالة دفاع عن النفس.
وجاء القرار بعد اجتماعات مطوّلة ناقشت خلالها هيئة المحلفين الأدلة التي قدّمها الادعاء، بما في ذلك تسجيلات كاميرات المراقبة وشهادات الشهود، لتنتهي بإدانته بارتكاب الجريمة.
تفاصيل الليلة الدامية
وأُدين عامل البناء تشاس كوريجان (22 عاماً) بقتل الطالب السعودي محمد القاسم (20 عاماً)، بطعنة قاتلة بينما كان الأخير يجلس مع أصدقائه خارج سكن الطلاب قرب محطة القطار الرئيسية في المدينة، قبيل الساعة 11:30 مساءً في الأول من أغسطس 2025.
وبحسب الادعاء، فإن المتهم هاجم القاسم بسكين مطبخ بعد «أمسية من شرب الكحول وتعاطي المخدرات». وأقرّ المتهم أمام المحكمة بحيازة السلاح الأبيض، لكنه أنكر نية القتل، مدعياً أنه لوّح بالسكين للتخويف فقط.
كاميرات المراقبة تكشف لحظات المواجهة
عرضت المحكمة تسجيلات وثّقت اللحظات الأخيرة قبل الطعن، حيث ظهر المتهم مرتدياً سترة فسفورية، وهو يقترب من القاسم ويتبادل معه الحديث، قبل أن يبتعد ثم يعود ويدخل في مشادة كلامية.
وأفاد المتهم بأنه كان متوجهاً إلى محطة القطار بعد أن أمضى وقتاً في حانة، تناول خلالها عدداً من المشروبات الكحولية، إضافة إلى تعاطيه الكوكايين مرتين، على حد قوله. وزعم أنه حمل سكين مطبخ «للدفاع عن النفس» بسبب تعرضه لاعتداء سابق.
وقال أمام هيئة المحلفين إنه اعتقد أن القاسم كان سيؤذيه، فأخرج السكين «لإخافته»، غير أن اللقطات أظهرت الضحية وهو يركض قبل أن ينهار أرضاً متأثراً بإصابته.
طعنة في الرقبة ومحاولات إنقاذ لم تُجدِ
وخلال جلسة سابقة، أوضح ممثل الادعاء أن الطعنة أصابت رقبة الضحية بعمق 11.5 سنتيمتر، ما أدى إلى تمزق الوريد الوداجي وفقدان كميات كبيرة من الدم. وتدخل عدد من الأطباء الموجودين خارج أوقات عملهم لتقديم الإسعافات الأولية، إلا أن محاولات إنقاذه باءت بالفشل.
مؤبد إلزامي.. والقاضي يحدد الحد الأدنى
وبموجب القانون البريطاني، تُعد عقوبة القتل العمد السجن مدى الحياة كحكم إلزامي، على أن يحدد القاضي الحد الأدنى لفترة العقوبة، والتي قد تتراوح بين 25 و30 عاماً، وفقاً لملابسات القضية.
ومن المقرر أن تعلن المحكمة خلال جلسة لاحقة موعد النطق بالحكم النهائي على المدان، الذي لم يُبدِ أي انفعال لحظة إعلان الإدانة.

The decision came after lengthy meetings during which the jury discussed the evidence presented by the prosecution, including surveillance camera footage and witness testimonies, ultimately leading to his conviction for committing the crime.
Details of the Bloody Night
Construction worker Chas Corrigan (22 years old) was convicted of murdering Saudi student Mohammed Al-Qasim (20 years old) with a fatal stab while the latter was sitting with friends outside student accommodation near the main train station in the city, shortly before 11:30 PM on August 1, 2025.
According to the prosecution, the defendant attacked Al-Qasim with a kitchen knife after “an evening of drinking alcohol and using drugs.” The defendant admitted in court to possessing the knife, but denied any intention to kill, claiming he only brandished the knife to scare him.
Surveillance Cameras Reveal Moments of Confrontation
The court presented recordings that documented the final moments before the stabbing, showing the defendant wearing a fluorescent jacket, approaching Al-Qasim and exchanging words with him, before stepping away and then returning to engage in a verbal altercation.
The defendant stated that he was heading to the train station after spending time in a pub, during which he consumed several alcoholic drinks, in addition to using cocaine twice, according to him. He claimed he carried the kitchen knife “for self-defense” due to a previous assault he had experienced.
He told the jury that he believed Al-Qasim was going to harm him, so he pulled out the knife “to scare him,” but the footage showed the victim running before collapsing on the ground due to his injury.
A Stab to the Neck and Failed Rescue Attempts
During a previous session, the prosecutor explained that the stab wound penetrated the victim’s neck to a depth of 11.5 centimeters, causing a tear in the jugular vein and significant blood loss. Several doctors present outside their working hours intervened to provide first aid, but their attempts to save him were unsuccessful.
Mandatory Life Sentence… and the Judge Sets the Minimum
Under British law, the penalty for murder is a life sentence as a mandatory punishment, with the judge determining the minimum period of the sentence, which may range from 25 to 30 years, depending on the circumstances of the case.
The court is set to announce during a later session the date for the final sentencing of the convicted individual, who showed no emotion at the moment of the conviction announcement.
